Step by Step Guide -VW Front Bumper Removal

  1. Remove the hood release lever by prying the metal retaining clip up using a small flathead screwdriver.
  2. Once you have removed the retaining clip and put in a safe location (label what it is so you don't forget) pry the plastic fork at the end of the release lever apart with the flathead screwdriver and make sure to unhook it from the points its mounted to. There should be a groove in the hook for a screwdriver to fit into. Focus on this step and make sure not to break anything - the plastic is pretty flexible so you will have some play to help you. Pry the fork apart while pulling on the release lever to detach it from its mounting point.
  3. Now, the front grill needs to come off. To do this, pull out and up on the sides of the top of the grill. There is a tab in the middle of the top part of the grill, put the flathead in there and push in to release the top part of the grill. Once you have unclipped the top part of the grill, pull the lower area of the grill up and out. Be gentle to ensure that nothing breaks. Then, place the grill on some bubble wrap or cardboard so that it doesn't get kicked or scratched.
  4. Remove the side marker lights on the vw bumper. Do this by pushing the side closest to the front of the car in and sliding a screwdriver wrapped in electric tape around the other side and pushing out. Be careful and take your time, as you don't want your light to crack. Once they are, place them aside and clean them up.
  5. Remove the torx bolts (30 mm size - 5 of them) in the front grill area. This is the area where you just removed the grill from.
  6. Remove the front lower grills on the right and left side of the bumper by grasping the middle horizontal grill member and pulling out - don't be scared, they will come off with some elbow grease.
  7. Remove the torx bolts on the in the front bumper by the wheel well. There are four of them and they are 25mm size.
  8. Make sure nothing is in the way of the vw bumper and slide it out.
  9. There you have it, removing VW Bumpers is really easy!
